This two-hour masterclass provides a foundational understanding of virtual production techniques for cinematographers, focusing on the use of LED wall technology.

Participants will explore key aspects of working with LED walls, including:

Fundamental Techniques of LED Wall Cinematography: Overview of methods for capturing dynamic, realistic visuals using LED wall technology, with practical guidance on visual fidelity and scene integration.

  • Lighting and Grip for LED Walls: Discussion of specialized lighting and rigging approaches suited to LED volumes, including best practices for consistent, immersive lighting

  • Camera Choices for LED Walls: Insights into camera selection and configurations that optimize performance for LED wall environments, addressing issues like moiré
  • Mitigating Moiré: Strategies to minimize or eliminate moiré patterns and other visual distortions common with LED screens.

  • Fundamentals of Matching Lighting: Techniques to seamlessly match virtual lighting to on-set lighting for continuity and realism.

This course is designed to equip Directors of Photography with practical skills and knowledge to confidently work with LED volumes, enhancing both visual storytelling and technical precision in virtual production environments

Kursledare

Cinematographer: Erik "Wolfie" Wolford

Erik "Wolfie" Wolford is a seasoned cinematographer with a specialty in LED volume cinematography. Certified by Epic Games in Unreal Engine, he brings expertise in virtual production to projects across features, commercials, and documentaries. Known for his beauty lighting, Wolfie's recent work includes Europa, a film set on Jupiter’s moon, and LED wall work for Liberty or Die (Rob Lowe) and George: Rise of a Revolutionary (Kelsey Grammer).

Wolfie’s portfolio spans award-winning shows like THE GOAT CODE, Elevator Pitch, and documentaries filmed in remote locales for Nat Geo and A Sherpa’s Life. He has also taught LED wall cinematography at Vilmos Zsigmond University, training professors on the latest virtual production techniques.

With a background in lighting on major films like Iron Man 3 and Interstellar, Wolfie combines classic cinematic lighting with advanced virtual production skills.

Johannes Skoog and Rasmus Eriksson

Johannes Skoog and Rasmus Eriksson are the founders of VP Nordic - which offers flexible solutions in Virtual Production (VP) in Scandinavia. VP, a technology where digital environments and visual effects are created and manipulated in real-time during filming, provides filmmakers with a unique opportunity to see and interact with these elements directly on the set. This contributes to greater creative freedom and efficiency in film production.

In collaboration with Kulturakademin, Rasmus and Johannes, who both have a background in film and broadcast, have taken a step towards sharing their knowledge in VP  through education. Their partnership with Kulturakademin and Film i Väst is driven by a vision to enhance the level of knowledge within the industry and in Västra Götaland. It also aims to bring forward new perspectives and innovative approaches, while contributing to the development of more sustainable and environmentally friendly production methods.
